Artistic Elements of Portraiture Advanced Level

Carl has been involved with photography for the last 20 years. He started his photographic career in the darkroom as a custom printer and technician. This has proven to be a great asset to his photography and teaching career. Carl is a Master Photographer and Craftsman with Professional Photographers of America. He has won numerous national awards for his photography, including 17 PPA Loan Collections and several Kodak Gallery and Fuji Masterpiece Awards. Carl has earned several Wisconsin State Awards, including Photographer of the Year two years in a row with an average print score of 92.

Carl will share his philosophies of artistic portraiture, what he looks for and what thought-process he goes through when creating an image. This is a class designed to stimulate, energize, and stretch your imagination. Carl will share his views on such topics as: composition, lighting, color harmony, and more. He will show: how depth is created; where and how to look for light; how to make portraits believable and interesting; how to choose the correct background and how to use it; how to use emotion to enhance an image; and how all of these pieces work together to create an artistic image. Carl will demonstrate how he uses natural light to create artistic images. All students will spend time with models and will have one-on-one time with Carl. We will have positive discussions of class assignments. Yes, this will be a hands-on class and you will be creating images. We will work with Photoshop to prepare our images for printing. We will also explore new ideas for our medium. If possible, please bring your own digital camera and laptop.
